Mandarin picking and the Jeju Olle Trail

Wednesday – We spent a fun morning at a citrus farm today. We were all given small secateurs and a plastic bucket, and sent off into huge plastic hothouses, where we were encouraged to pick and eat as many mandarins as we liked. The kids had a great time choosing which ones to pick, peel and eat. We also got to try the Jeju speciality fruit – which looks like a large orange with a big knob on top. It is picked, and then has to sit for 2 months before you can eat it. It is about $40 a kilo!!!
Next we were dropped off at the seaside on part of the Jeju Olle (walking) Trail. Our guides told us it was a nice flat walk along the seaside for an hour or so. In reality it turned into a 2 ½ hour walk along hilly tracks (with absolutely stunning views of the coastline), and clambering over volcanic boulders. The kids were all terrific, and turned it into an adventure – looking at rockpools, hiding behind boulders and trees and ‘shooting’ each other, and trying to beat each other along various sections. Scattered along the way were many little stalls of ajoomanis (older woman) trying to sell mandarins and various things. The Olle Trail is a series of 14 different courses that run along the shoreline. It was a beautiful warm sunny spring day, and the scenery was just breathtaking in beauty.

Finally after a few kilometres, we met our bus, and drove the short distance to our lunch restaurant. Once again we could choose off the menu (Brendan had spicy pork casserole, and I had beef bulgogi stew – yum). A wander through the shops on the way back to the bus, then home to pack up our suitcases and do some last minute washing. We are all meeting at 6.30pm for some traditional Norebung (Karoke). We will be sad to leave this beautiful island – there is so much we haven’t seen, so we must come back again one day! We farewelled our two lovely Jeju guides ‘Fancy Nancy’ and ‘Jane’ tonight – goodbye girls we will miss you.
